Welcome to The Kishinev Jewish Cultural Center

The Kishinev Jewish Cultural Center and Jewish Municipal Library named after the famous poet Yitzik Manger are situated in a picturesque historic district where every stone reminds the visitor of the history and destiny of Bessarabian Jewry. Due to the support and contributions by the Jewish Cultural Society, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), Kishinev Central Municipal Library and private individuals and foundations including the Meyerhoff Foundation of Baltimore, Maryland, the Library has become a real community center for all local Jewish organizations and for the Moldovan Jewish community at large.
Recent expansion and renovations funded through the support of JDC has enabled the staff to offer new and innovative programming to an ever-increasing number of patrons. Further, through the Former Soviet Union Jewish Libraries Association, coordinated by the JDC, the Jewish Library in Kishinev has also become a regional creative center from which a variety of unique and innovative books and programs are distributed to other Jewish libraries throughout the former Soviet Union.

Our klezmer band in Iasi
The 3 rd edition of the “A. Goldfaden” International Festival of Jewish Theatre was held in Iasi ( Romania ) in the period October 24-29, 2004 . The place for this festival has not been chosen by chance. In 1876, Abraham Goldfaden, famous Jewish playwright, ‘the father of the Jewish theatre' has created the 1 st professional Jewish theatre in the world in Iasi .
The Festival is not a simple theatre and music forum. It's in the same time performance, concert, seminar, conference, workshop, master class and round-table for the best actors, klezmers and vocalists from worldwide. Among the participants in this event, there were: the well-known Maya Morgenstern in the play ‘Asta-seara: LolaBlau!' (J. Kreisler); the Israeli duet Betty and Carol Feldman in the play ‘Cofetaria' (I.B. Singer), the Jewish theatre of Miri Ben Shalom (NY) and the play ‘I can cry!'; one-man show ‘Now you are talking!' with Raul Reichman (GB) etc.
‘Freigish' klezmer band was invited to the Festival for the 2 nd time. The program of the performance consisted both of instrumental music (‘The lament of a Jew', ‘Romanian hora', ‘Noch a bissele', ‘Kishinever bulgar', ‘Fun der khupe', ‘Mitzvoch tantz' etc) and songs in Yiddish, Hebrew, Ladino and Romanian performed by the brilliant soloist, Alla Deresco. Each song was accompanied by long storms of applause. ‘I haven't heard such songs since my childhood. Thank you very much for these unforgettable moments', said Miriam kaiserman to the bands' members.
